My eyes were playing tricks on me. I thought that text by the temp gauge said "check engine oil nightly".

Oppo is the absolute worst place for someone doing research on a car purchase. Too damn many options. Now I want to add an E46 M3 to the list.

Far more interesting than the Chrysler 200 in front of you.

I thought the 3 spoke sport wheel only came on the '99s in the US? The perforated leather could mean that it's a euro wheel that was put on afterward I guess.

Mmmm... Phoenix Yellow.

Or should it be Alpine White on Cinnamon?

Go Alpine, keep my PY unique ;)

Unless the PY is manual, then go with that. But I'm a neanderthal who prefers three pedals.

I'd prefer a manual, but I am open to the idea of SMG. I've never driven one, but I've heard that particular SMG can take some getting used to.

Nope. The E46 never got this wheel either

Wait a minute... which ones don't have a dipstick? Because I know the BMW engineering department definitely does.

It's hard to find a color these cars don't look good in.

Not sure when it started. None of the new BMWs have them. I'm pretty sure everything from the E90/92 on has an electronic oil level. It's a digital readout... which seems scary if your oil level sensor craps out.

The E9x generation doesn't have a dipstick. Which infuriates me. But if one is so inclined Bimmerworld makes an oil pan with one retrofitted.

The SMG is great on the track and I could DD it in a pinch. But personally I find it's a little too jerky on engagement for city driving. I could get used to it but the third pedal is just better for me.

The SMG III on the E60/63 M5 and M6 is better still, but only butter smooth when wringing it out in aggressive driving. Again a little to unrefined for me when it comes to city driving.

No ASC+T, so '95? Unless newer without the option.

Kinja'd!!! ZiptieMcBumper > Too many M's

Kinja'd!!!0

That's good to know. I've seen in-car videos of people driving them, and the shifts did look a bit abrupt. I doubt that would bother me too much, since 80% of my driving is on the highway. Then again, you could always put it it auto if you have passengers in the car.

The only thing that concerns me about the DSG in manual mode is if it causes more stress on the drivetrain and the car in general than a smoothly shifted manual.

Kinja'd!!! Too many M's > ZiptieMcBumper

Kinja'd!!!1

No more stress than a bad manual shift. It's perfect every time.

The trick to SMG vs the DCT/DSG is that you should drive the SMG like a manual without the third pedal. The module will still slip the clutch on startup and roll back on hills before the clutch engages. Like I said, tolerable but I'd rather just have the third pedal.

Kinja'd!!! ZiptieMcBumper > Too many M's

Kinja'd!!!0

Thanks for all the good info. All things considered, I'd probably rather have three pedals as well. I just wouldn't want to rule out the other option if there was a DSG equipped car I fell in love with.

I'll start studying m3 forum a little harder. Are there any other forums/knowledge bases that you recommend?

Finally! My years of noticing small details are paying off. I am jealous of your OBD-I, it would make the S54 swap in my '99 M3 so much easier.

If I were to get an E46m, I would easily spend a few months just trying to hunt down a good Oxford one (or maybe Techno Violet).

Kinja'd!!! Too many M's > E30Kid

Kinja'd!!!1

Not sure how many Techno Violet E46Ms there were. Oxford is a little easier to find but not by much.

Yeah, Techno Violet was an individual color for E46Ms so they're really rare, but I've seen them for sale before.
